Autumn colors leaves8/3/2023 Not all trees produce anthocyanins, and therefore not all trees produce red leaves. Red colors in leaves come from a chemical called anthocyanin that trees produce to recover nutrients from leaves before they fall off. Trees produce a lot of this chemical when sunny days are followed by cool, but not freezing, nights. This allows the leaves' carotenoid pigments to shine through, giving leaves their yellow, orange and brown hues. A moderate drought or warm fall like we had last year can trick trees into thinking it's still summer.Īs the amount of daylight decreases and temperatures drop, trees slow their production of chlorophyll, which gives leaves their green color. That's because weather also plays a role in when leaves change and how vibrant the colors are. Last year, colors were a little late and reached their peak in northern Wisconsin the first week in October and in southern Wisconsin the third week in October. So you can generally see fall colors in Wisconsin from mid-September through October. Central Wisconsin follows a week after that, and southern Wisconsin colors usually are at peak in mid-October. In Wisconsin, trees generally begin changing in northern Wisconsin in mid-September, reaching their peak toward the end of the month or the beginning of October.
